Chapter 45
It was a little after one as Fenella and her team mixed a late lunch with a catch-up briefing. Across the room, the tea urn hissed and from the hallway, through the open door, a bark of laughter spilt in.
"Nice bit of mutton," Dexter said, chewing on one of the sandwiches from the stack Fenella had shared. "Can't beat a cold cut when you are on the go." He turned to Jones. "Have another sandwich lad and that apple too. It'll put hairs on your chest."
Jones nibbled at the edge of the thick wedged bread, then pulled the meat out from between the slices, sniffed and chewed.
"Cutting back on the carbs," he said, "Protein and fat will keep me lean."
He was big on exercise and eating healthy. It showed in his athletic build.
Dexter frowned. "They teach you that in detective school?"
"If I overload on bread, I'll fall asleep in the afternoon."
"Nowt wrong with solid food, lad." Dexter took another bite, followed by a swig of tea. "Give it here. I'll take them slices if you don't want them."
They ate the rest of the sandwiches in silence. Jones picked out the lamb from the bread and Dexter hoovered up the empty slices. By the time they came to the apple, Fenella's stomach bulged. She'd had enough of the lamb with its thick meaty taste and greasy texture.
"You have that apple, lad," Dexter said. "It'll keep you lean."
Jones took a large bite and chewed and chewed. It was as his face screwed into a tight ball that Fenella burst out in laughter.
She said, "Mr Bray's apples are best enjoyed a small bite at a time or stewed in a pot with a load of sugar."
"Right you are, boss," Jones replied, spiting the remains into a handkerchief. "I think a half-starved horse would turn its nose up at that thing. I've tasted sweeter crab apples."
"Always did say apples ain't no good unless they are used for cider," Dexter muttered.
Fenella poured a second cup of tea and they began discussing the case. "So," she said after they had brought Jones up to speed on their early morning meeting with Dr MacKay. "Pam Wells and Jane Ragsdale. What else have we got?"
"I've pulled the record on Miss Wells," Dexter said, handing out photocopies of the file. "She went missing at the end of May, eight years ago. Her dad, Mr Bruce Wells, filed the report, but he died a while back. No other relatives. No sightings of Pam over the years. The trail went cold. Now we know why."
They read the report in silence. Less than four pagesâname, date of birth and brief notes about Pam supplied by her late dad.
"Riveting reading," Fenella said, as Jones tapped on his laptop. "Four pages of nothing to sum up her life. What was the lass like? Who were her friends?"
"Aye, Guv," Dexter said, reaching into his jacket pocket and shaking a blue packet of peanuts into his mouth. He chewed for a moment. "You'd think it was a report for some factory widget for all it tells us.
